Food and drink wholesaler Booker has trained 31 colleagues to start a career in butchery, having recognised a shortage in the industry.

The Butchery Apprenticeship Programme in 2008 has seen more than 90 colleagues graduate. It provides an opportunity to learn skills over 12 months and gain knowledge and practical experience.

On completion of the programme, colleagues are awarded with an accredited certificate from the University of West London to recognise their achievement. They can become butchery managers with further development.

“Booker’s in-branch butchery department is an area that we always take pride in offering our customers excellent choice and price — and is a unique service for caterers,” said Stuart Hyslop, sales director – catering.

“By offering this specialist service, we can help customers create menus and ensure they are maximising their profits. Any caterer who would like to learn more about this service can call into their local Booker branch and discuss their requirements with a member of our butchery team.”
