A finalist of a national TV cooking competition has taken the post as head chef of a Newcastle pub.

John Calton, who made the final three in the BBC series Masterchef: The Professionals in 2010, will run the kitchen at Punch Taverns pub Harbour Lights in South Shields.

Craig Shelmerdine, licensee of the newly opened pub, is also from South Shields.

“It is the first time I have worked in South Shields since I was 18 at the Little Haven Hotel,” said Calton. “It is great to come home.

“I was just ready for a new venture really. I am just relishing a new challenge. We want to give people good fresh food that is home-cooked, using the best ingredients and the region’s best suppliers and use seasonal produce where possible.”
