Sky Business boss Holden to leave

Iain Holden is to leave his role as managing director of Sky Business, the commercial division of the broadcaster that supplies Premier League football to pubs.

Holden is to be replaced by David Rey, who was commercial director at the company until 2009 before taking other roles including chief business officer at sister company News International, publisher of newspapers The Sun and The Times.

The news follows the High Court ruling last week in favour of licensee Karen Murphy in her long-running legal battle about foreign satellite football screenings. The ruling could have major implications on screening rights of Premier League football in the UK.

Sky said Rey will “build on the legal clarity that now exists in relation to this issue”. He and his team will “embark on a comprehensive campaign to highlight the benefits of live sport through Sky”.

The broadcaster said remit will also involve the broadcaster “continuing to evolve” its pricing structure, and focusing on new technology such as WiFi, 3D and HD.

Mike Darcey, Sky’s chief operating officer, said: “Under Iain’s leadership the team has taken Sky into tens of thousands of commercial premises where audiences of more than 5m now enjoy live sport each week. I’d like to thank Iain for his significant contribution to the business and would like to wish him every success in the future.

“At the same time as we bid Iain farewell we welcome back David Rey. Following the recent clarification on the use of foreign satellite services, Sky Business is now entering a new phase and I’m delighted that David will be on board to build even closer relationships with our commercial customers.”

Rey said: “Building on the great foundation established by Iain, I’m looking forward to working with our commercial customers to bring the benefit of live sport to even more customers and even bigger audiences. With a great set of products, new pricing and a clear regulatory environment, it’s a great time to be overseeing the next chapter in Sky Business’ story.”
