Young's and G1 Group were double award winners at the Publican Awards last night, the biggest event in the pub industry calendar.

More than 1,200 people attended the glitzy awards ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel, hosted by top comedian Jimmy Carr, which recognised the achievements of top pub companies across 12 categories.

Other winners on the night included Thwaites, Hall & Woodhouse, Shepherd Neame, Spirit Pub Company and Revolution operator Inventive Leisure.

The Publican's Morning Advertiser's group editor Rob Willock provided the welcome for guests, labelling pubs "the embodiment of the Big Society" and praising finalists for their innovation.

"Some of the pub industry’s best assets are represented here in the clever and creative people behind thousands of successful British pubs: responsible retailers raising standards and working hard to make a good night out better than a good night in," he said.

The rigorous judging process included headquarter site visits by senior members of the PMA's editorial team, mystery site visits to finalists’ outlets and research interviews in five categories by market researchers him!.

The final stage of judging involved panel interviews of a senior representative from the finalist’s company by a team of industry experts, including City analysts, journalists, top industry consultants and industry body chiefs.

The Outstanding Industry Contribution Award was posthumously given to Jeremy Allen, the highly respected co-founder of law firm Poppleston Allen, who sadly died last year. There were emotional scenes as Allen's son and daughter collected the award in recognition of their father's immense contribution to the pub trade.
