Barnstaple and North Devon Licensed Victuallers’ Association (LVA) is on the recruitment trail, fearing it could face closure due to a lack of members.

The LVA — at more than 100 years old, one of the oldest in the country — has been struggling for the past few years with a fluctuating membership of only around 10 to 15 people.

LVA secretary Jean Knill said: “There are quite a lot of pubs locally that could be members.

“We try and help each other in lots of ways. If any licensee has a grievance we try to help them. It is just a shame not to keep the LVA going, as much as anything else it is social and we also call in trade people who can give discounts on goods to local licensees.”

Licensees can join the LVA for £40 a year. Call 01271 611057 for details.
