Tadcaster converts four tenanted pubs to managed

Tadcaster Pub Company, the northern England-based pub operator, has revealed that it has converted four of its tenanted pubs to managed and is looking to convert two more sites in the near future.

It represents a departure for the 30-strong company, which had previously operated a leased and tenanted model.

Managing director James Crawfurd-Porter told M&C Report: “We have four that we’ve set up as managed houses. They are going to remain managed for the foreseeable future.”

Crawfurd-Porter said that sites, which previously operated on temporary management contracts, have generated more trade under the new managed structure, although Tadcaster did make investments of some form in each of the sites.

“In the right [pubs], if we do the right things with them we can sometimes make a better fist of these units than the tenants do.”

He said another couple of sites currently operating under temporary management are expected to be converted to the new managed structure. He compared Tadcaster’s strategy to those adopted by national operators such as Enterprise Inns, with its Project Beacon managed tenancy agreements.

“Everybody is having to be more flexible than they were in the past,” he added.
