Demand for the Cask Marque award — which recognises pubs that offer quality cask ale — is catching on in Europe and across the Atlantic.

The Bombardier in Paris, run by Charles Wells through its John Bull Pub Company, is the latest to achieve the award after investing in dispense and beer cooling equipment.

This follows on from the first pub in Spain to gain the award, The Lounge near Malaga, with a further 10 more sites likely to be nominated. Pubs in Denmark, Finland and Sweden also hold accreditation.

Cask Marque is also making strides into the emerging cask-ale market in the US and is in discussions with interested parties to promote beer quality State-side. Currently it is trialling the scheme with six retailers in Pennsylvania, supported by several leading UK brewers.

Cask Marque executive director Paul Nunny said he was excited about the momentum behind the scheme: “The fact that pubs selling cask outside the UK wish to achieve the award shows how our reputation is spreading,” he said.

“Our CaskFinder app can now be downloaded in Europe and America and this will help spread the word.”

More than 8,000 pubs in the UK have achieved the Cask Marque award.
