The Blade Bone Inn of Bucklebury, Berkshire, took first place in the Scotch Egg Challenge 2013.

Hosted by Young’s pub the Ship in Wandworth, London, 22 pubs made it to the final cook-off on Tuesday, which was hosted by beer writer Melissa Cole.

Heston Blumenthal’s the Hinds Head of Bray, Berkshire came second with defending champion the Drapers Arms taking third place. A special nod was given to Peyton and Byrne.

The panel was made up of Channel 4’s Baking Mad host Eric Landlard; Cook Yourself Thin’s Gizzi Erskine; egg fanatic and host of last year’s Challenge David J Constable of www.forevereggsploring.com​; Fortnum and Mason’s consultant chef Shaun Hill of the Walnut Tree; and renowned Bubbledogs head chef James Knappett of Berkeley fame.

Over 300 eggs were cooked and served to judges and spectators as part of the competition. The Ship had an extra 296 scotch eggs ready by 6pm as 180 were sold at last year’s event, but they sold out soon after 8pm.
