Four pubs have been crowned winners Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) National Pub Design Awards.

The awards are held in association with English Heritage and The Victorian Society.

The winners are:

Conversion to Pub Use

Drop Forge, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

English Heritage Conservation Award (joint winners)

Magpie, Carlisle, Cumbria

Prince Rupert, Newark, Nottinghamshire

Refurbishment category

Joule’s Brewery Tap, Market Drayton, Shropshire

Commenting on the winning designs, Dr Steven Parissien, an architectural historian, and one of the competition judges, said: “Amidst the gloom and doom, this past year has, reassuringly, seen a number of first-rate pub schemes, all of which illustrate how pubs can, and should, be treated. Interestingly, the majority of our award winners involve new work done to historic, listed buildings – which, for many both at home and abroad, define what a pub should be.”
