Sixty MPs have called for a freeze in beer duty in next month’s Budget by sending a ‘message in a barrel’ to Chancellor George Osborne at an event in Westminster.

A hand-crafted oak barrel made by North Yorkshire brewer Theakston’s was delivered to the Treasury by MPs and representatives of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers).

It contained messages from the 60 MPs calling for an end to the beer duty escalator, which has put up beer duty by 42% since 2008.

BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “I want to thank so many MPs for championing beer and pubs in their constituency. Beer Tax hikes are not raising more revenues for the Government, and with a duty freeze we can create many more jobs.”

National newspaper the Sun joined the campaign to scrap the beer duty escalator this week, and the TaxPayers' Alliance launched its Mash Beer Tax campaign.

The Budget takes place on Wednesday 20 March.
