England’s oldest pub has made it on to VisitEngland’s ‘Bucket List’, in commemoration of St. George’s Day.

The list comprises of ‘101 things to do before you go abroad’, and was voted for by the public, before being whittled down by the national tourist board and a panel of experts, which included Bill Oddie.

A visit to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham, secured a spot on the hotly-contested list.

The pub, which sign states it was established in 1189, is carved into rock and connected with the labyrinth of sandstone caves at the foot of Nottingham Castle. Legend has it that knights answering the calls of Richard I to join the crusades stopped off at the inn for a drink on their way to Jerusalem.

A Greene King spokesperson said: “This is wonderful recognition for the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. It is a fascinating pub with enormous history as reputedly England’s oldest inn, but at its heart it’s simply proud to be a great pub serving quality food and drink.”

The food and drink section generated over 100 suggested venues, but the historical pub came out on top. Ian Fleming’s former watering hole, Dukes Hotel, Mayfair, also made the grade.

Outside of this category, trips to Manchester’s Football Museum, Stonehenge, and a night out in Newcastle all made VisitEngland’s Bucket List.

VisitEngland’s Chairman, Lady Cobham, said: “The selection process wasn’t easy - we have such an embarrassment of riches in this country, that we couldn’t include every single landmark – but the end result is a mix of the most incredible and unique experiences, with something for everyone.”
