Pubs in Woolwich have been told by police to stay vigilant following the murder of a soldier
Pubs in Woolwich are facing continued disruption following yesterday’s attack in which a young soldier was brutally murdered outside the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Riot police were brought out to contain an English Defence League (EDL) demonstration following the killing, affecting trade and forcing many pubs to close early.

Keith Tuckley, licensee at the George IV in Woolwich, said he had to move on hundreds members of the EDL – and he expects further disturbances over the next few days.

Tuckley said: “I expect tensions could be high over the next few days – we always have extra door security at weekends, but it might be that we have to close earlier.

“We just don’t know how things will pan out – we’ll have to suck it and see.”

Richard Brett, bar manager at Prince Albert Rose’s, explained that the police were visiting all the pubs in the area to provide reassurances. “They didn’t say a great deal other than to check that everything was ok. I think it was more a case of showing their presence.”

Further afield, pubs near army barracks have been warned to stay vigilant in the wake of the attack.

The Duke of Cambridge, in Twickenham, is across the road from Kneller Hall army barracks, and lessee Bob Wood said the area was in lockdown last night.

“Because of our location, I’ve already been on a couple of terrorism prevention courses,” Wood explained. “It’s really all about having your wits about you, but in truth there’s only so much you can do.

“Let’s hope it was a one-off incident.”

Meanwhile, pubs have been reminded that there is official police guidance surrounding terrorist threats.

According to the guidance, simple steps such as regularly searching premises, remaining vigilant during opening hours, and reporting suspicious activity can help safeguard against attacks.
