A Lancashire pub threw a surprise 80th birthday party for its longest serving regular who has been visiting the pub for 62 years.

John Pilkington, who lives yards away from the Britannia Inn in Oswaldtwistle, has been going in for a pint at six o’clock nearly everyday since he was 18.

The pub organised a buffet party to celebrate the occasion for locals and friends and created a special pump clip reading ‘Old Pilk - 80% grumpy with malty, nutty flavours’. Landlords Paul Young and Tony Day also gave him a gallon of Thwaites’ cask ale.

Young said: “After 62 years, we felt it was time to celebrate both his loyal custom and his significant birthday. In our relatively short time as landlords, we’ve got to know John and he came with the pub!”
