The company behind Rekorderlig cider has launched a Swedish lager in the UK.

Manchester-based drinks distributor Chilli Marketing hopes to tap into the growth of world lager with Åbro, a 5.1% ABV Pilsner-style lager.

The brand was first unveiled in Manchester in May but is now being rolled out across the UK.

It is made by the Åbro brewery, which makes beers accounting for 8% of the Swedish market. It has spent three years developing the beer, which is brewed to German Purity Laws and with Swedish barley, which it says grows slowly in the chilly Swedish climate, giving extra character to the malt.

Spring water and a combination of Spalt Select, Taurus and Perle hops complete the beer, which won a gold medal in the Monde Selection competition this April.

“Swedes are perfectionists who don’t leave anything to chance, and their beers are no exception,” said marketing director Gemma Copping.

A campaign to raise awareness of the new beer is also being launched.

Under the slogan, The Swedish One, activity will highlight the fact the brewery was established in 1856, along with the quality of the lager.

A bespoke glass, designed with a tall, thin shape to “stimulate the full flavour of the beer”, will also be distributed to outlets.
