Bar staff: on-the-spot fines for underage sales have increased by £10

Licensees and bar staff caught serving an under 18 or drunk person will now be given £90 on-the-spot fines, instead of £80.

The change to Penalty Notices for Disorder (PND) came into effect from 1 July, under section 6 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001.

It impacts the following offences:

The sale or attempted sale of alcohol to a person who is drunk
The supply of alcohol by or on behalf of a club to a person aged under 18
The sale of alcohol anywhere to a person under 18
A person who buys or attempts to buy alcohol on behalf of person under 18
A person who buys or attempts to buy alcohol for consumption on relevant premises by person under 18
The delivery of alcohol to person under 18 or allowing such delivery

The guidance said that aim of the PND scheme is “to offer operational officers a quick and effective alternative” to dealing with low-level offending, deliver a “swift” deterrent, reduce paperwork and increase time that constables spend on the street.
