Caledonian Brewery, the Heineken-owned Scottish brewer, has announced that Stephen Crawley is to stand down as managing director at the end of 2013 after 20 years at the company.

A recruitment process is now underway to find the successor to Crawley, who became managing director in 2001.

Keith Hogg, chairman of Caledonian, said: "Stephen has successfully led the Caley through a significant period of change, and we will all be very sad to see him go. He leaves, having put the business in a very strong position, poised to further benefit from the increased interest in cask beers. He has developed an excellent senior management team, and has worked tirelessly to find new markets for our great beers."

Crawley said: "It has certainly been an interesting ride at Slateford Road, yet it feels the right time to let someone else take the reins for the next Caley chapter. It is particularly pleasing to leave with the brewery busier than ever.

"I have always stressed to employees that Caledonian is a winner and we are privileged to be part of a remarkable story. Being able to operate on an independent basis has certainly allowed us to retain the pride and passion for Caledonian’s real heroes - the beer and the brewery."
