A Hertford-based family brewer is on the hunt for enthusiastic entrepreneurs to run one of its pubs with a difference - they do not need to invest any capital, pay rent, utilities or rates.

The McMullen company, which operates 46 tenanted pubs and 86 managed outlets, is looking for successful chefs and budding business people to manage The Stag, a newly refurbished gastro pub in Heronsgate, near Chorleywood.

According to the brewer, candidates do not need financial backing to prove their talents but must possess strong management skills and an interest in running their own food business. The pub, which is available on its Pub Operators (Franchise) Agreement, underwent a £120,000 refurbishment in July 2012 and trades around £9,000 a week.

'Once in a lifetime opportunity'

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a chef who would like to run their own pub but simply has not been given the chance for whatever reasons,” Gavin Mansfield, McMullen tenant operations manager said.

“The Stag has proved incredibly profitable since its refurbishment, and is sure to continue this success with the right operator. At McMullen, we are looking to work with people who have the right aptitude and ability, not simply the right bank balance.”

The brewer is also looking for a tenant with a strong food background to manage The Blue Anchor, in St Albans. This pub was previously run by celebrity chef Paul Bloxham.
