PubFood looks at pub activity planned for St Patrick’s Day (17 March).

The Water Poet in Spitalfields, east London is hosting a three-day celebration with live music and authentic dishes. On Saturday, 15 March a full Irish breakfast will be offered between 11am and 4pm including bacon, sausages, Clonakilty black and white puddings, boxty, eggs and soda bread (£10.50).

A dedicated Guinness bar called Guinness Island, will run in the pub's garden which will serve from noon and from 3pm Kilravoc spit roast hog baps (£6.50) and Irish stew and soda bread (£8) will be served. The Six Nations will be shown on seven screens.

Sunday will see Irish dishes while Monday will feature an exclusive St Patrick’s Day steak and Guinness pie produced by Timmy’s Pies with West Country beef slow cooked with Guinness, onions and carrot in shortcrust pastry as well as a full Irish breakfast between 11am and 4pm and hog roast baps later in the day. Traditional live Irish music will be played between 6pm and 8pm.

At the Crabtree in Lower Beeding, West Sussex, a St Patrick's Day menu features Irish stew and pies.

St Paddy’s Day cocktails

Mitchells & Butler's Sizzling Pub Company sites will offer ‘some Irish cheer’ in the way of food and drink promotions. Between Monday (10 March) and 17 March customers can order a burger and pint of Guinness for £5.99 and there are also some specially-created St Paddy’s Day cocktails on offer.

Bank holiday

Mitchells & Butlers Irish chain O’Neills in Woking, Surrey will put on a line-up of sport, music, jigging and charity events for the big day. Offers will include a pint of Guinness or a Jameson and ginger for £1.99 between 12 noon and 3pm and lunch and a drink for £4.49.

The group is also petitioning to make St Patrick’s Day a national holiday and is after 100,000 signatures to take it to Parliament.

Sham-rock

Honky Tonk bar in Clapham Common, south London will host a Sham Rock night on Saturday, 15 March with live bands playing Irish rock tunes. Dishes such as Jamesons whickey marinated ribs will be on offer. The celebrations will continue throughout Sunday and Monday with more live music and Irish beef burgers.
