Bombardier is calling for St George’s Day to be made a bank holiday.

Brewer Wells & Young’s is issuing the rallying cry following a recent poll, carried out by the think-tank British Future, which found the English are more likely to be able to correctly date Independence Day and St Patrick’s Day than they are their own patron saint’s day.

The research suggests 76% of people want St George’s Day to be celebrated more than — or as much as — St Patrick’s Day, and 41% said that they felt it wasn’t celebrated more because there was no bank holiday.

A petition has been set up, which can be accessed via the Bombardier Facebook page, as part of a range of activity to lobby the Government on the issue.

Enthusiasm

“If we want people to get behind St George’s Day we have to give them a reason to celebrate and a cause to get involved in,” said marketing manager Emily Hudson.

“As part of the campaign we will also be encouraging people to show their enthusiasm for St George’s Day, and — as the Great English Pub will be at the heart of celebrations — we have created great kits for pubs.”

Separately, the brewer plans to bring out a new Bombardier beer in cask next month. Bombardier Burning Gold, is a “zesty, golden version of the beer, which is perfect for spring and summer”. It has previously been available in bottles.
