Sky has launched a new online training course to help operators “reap the full benefits” from showing live sport in their pub.

Developed in association with CPL Training, ‘Making the Most of Sport’ is a free interactive course, featuring practical advice for licensees and bar staff on how to attract footfall, maximise customer spend and increase dwell time when showing sport.

The course lasts an hour and includes three modules – ‘On Your Marks’ (how to plan events), ‘Get Set’ (how to effectively market events) and ‘Go’ (how to execute well on the day) - as well as a video welcome and summary from Sky Sports news presenter Jim White and a knowledge test at the end. Each module includes interactive features, including one part set in the studio of Saturday Night Football and another set in an interactive pub, where users can focus on room layout and their food and drink offering.

Everyone who completes the course will receive certification from CPL Training Group.

New to sport

Sky said the training is targeted at licensees and staff who are new to promoting live sport in their venues or more experienced operators looking for fresh ideas and assurance that they are marketing their sports offering in the best way. It is aimed at current Sky customers, but the company said it could be equally useful for licensees considering investing in Sky.

Sky Business managing director David Rey said: “Live sport is a key profit driver for pubs and clubs and licensees who get it right can turn their venue into the place to watch live sport to drive some big returns.”

The training course is available at www.previewlive.co.uk/training from today (1 May). It will be available on mobile and tablet from 1 June.
