The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) has created a table to show which European election candidates support beer.

The table is based on an online poll candidates were encouraged to complete on the manufacture, taxation and cultural importance of beer.

Only 20 of the UK’s candidates took part in the poll. The results show four prospective MEPs pledging full support on all questions – Alexandra Phillips and Keith Taylor for the Greens in the South East of England; Lib Dem East Midlands candidate George Smid; and Kevin Beaty, who is standing for the Conservatives in North West England.

Jean Lambert, another Green candidate in the South East and Phil Knowles for the Lib Dems in the East Midlands, were the most cautious – failing to agree or disagree with any of the statements.

Cornerstone

Taylor was one of the few to include comments in his answers saying  the promotion of community pubs should be the “cornerstone of a strategy to promote responsible drinking and preventing anti-social behaviour”. He said the Greens support pubco reform and that beers should say clearly whether they are suitable for vegans.

Henri Reuchlin, chairman of EBCU, said the Beer-o-meter showed “what enthusiasm can be created when consumers from several countries combine their effort for a common goal: a diverse an vibrant beer culture”.

He added: “Unfortunately, this enthusiasm is not yet shared by the majority of the European candidates. Roughly 12% of the candidates invited took the time to answer the poll. We would like to thank the ones that took the effort.”
