A charity has set up its own dry pub, in a bid to teach teenagers how to stay safe on a night out.

The pub, which comes complete with pumps and bottles filled with tea and coffee instead of alcohol, was set up in Bournemouth by charity Streetwise.

The ‘pub’ is housed on the top floor of the organisation’s education centre in West Howe, and is designed to reflect a working pub as closely as possible – but without the alcohol.

The Nightwise project teaches youngsters about the strengths of alcohol, how many units in a drink, spiking, getting home safely and looking after each other. It was launched by Jane Stichbury, High Sheriff of Dorset and Christopher Lees, chairman of the Talbot Village Trust, with snacks and non-alcoholic cocktails provided by JD Wetherspoon.

Funding

The two storey development was supported by a grant of £40,500 from The Talbot Village Trust to help fund the bar.

“Streetwise is an essential community asset serving a wide area of Dorset and providing important life lessons to young people,” said Lees.

“There are so many different challenges facing children and teenagers nowadays and Streetwise is leading the way in helping them to make the right decisions in order to protect themselves and others.  The Trust is pleased to be able to support such a worthwhile cause.”
