A Somerset pub has won an award thanks to some of the toughest critics around – online commenters.

The Virginia Ash at Henstridge near Templecombe has been awarded a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor because of the number of positive comments it has generated.

Roger Hiron, who runs the free house with his wife Marion, said: “It’s brilliant because the people you most want to please are the customers, so we’d just like to say thank you to all the people who visited us and put positive comments up about us.”

TripAdvisor uses an algorithm to judge the awards, which looks into all the ratings the pub has received, how many they’ve received and how consistently they’ve received them. The Virginia Ash has kept up an average of 4.9 stars out of 5.

“It’s a real vote of confidence from our customers,” said Hiron. “It’s also great to get recognition for all the hard work everyone has put in to turning the pub around since we got here 2 and a half years ago.”

“TripAdvisor is always pleased to honour exceptional businesses for consistent excellence,” said Marc Charron, president of TripAdvisor for Business.
