The work being done by the licensed hospitality sector to tackle disorder has been praised in light of figures showing crime is at its lowest since 1981.

The latest edition of the Crime Survey for England and Wales showed total crime fell 14% and violent crime by 20% in 2013/14.

Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers strategic affairs director Kate Nicholls said: “These statistics show clearly the benefits of increased investment in crime reduction measures by licensed premises. Rising night-time footfall has been more than matched by investment in security and an enhanced focus from retailers on positive partnerships with local authorities and police forces. Figures from last year’s ALMR Benchmarking report showed that, on average, town centre pubs invested 2.6% of turnover in security and door staff, rising to 11.4% for nightclubs.

“The licensed hospitality sector has invested significant levels of money, time and manpower into tackling disorder and providing safe, responsible environments for customers and members of the public.

“We remain committed to working with local authorities and central Government to promote voluntary and partnership schemes such as Best Bar None, Purple Flag and Business Improvement Districts to ensure a continued downward trend in levels of disorder.”
