A number of leading UK gastropubs have been announced among the finalists of this year’s annual Scotch Egg Challenge.

Taking place at the Ship, in Wandsworth, south London, on Tuesday 16 September, the Scotch Egg Challenge 2014 will bring together chefs from 17 different UK venues to find out which Scotch egg is the best in the country.

Also among the finalists is Jessica Mason, features editor at the Publican’s Morning Advertiser, who will be serving up quails eggs wrapped in pork, leek and beer crumbs.

Pub participants include the Canbury Arms, in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, which will be showcasing a wild boar and thyme Scotch egg with mustard mayonnaise; and the Princess Victoria in Shepherds Bush, west London, which will be offering up a legbar egg rolled in Tamworth middle white pork, herbs and spices.

Scotch eggs made from black pudding feature prominently on this year’s list. The Red Lion in Britwell Salome, near Watlington, Oxfordshire will be serving up a black pudding Scotch egg with chilli jam.

The Swan, in Bampton, Devon, meanwhile, will be presenting its pork, duck and black pudding Scotch egg.

Expert panel

Each of the Scotch eggs at the free-to-attend event will be judged by a panel of experts, including the Guardian’s Bob Granleese and Catherine Hanly from Hot Dinners. The evening will be compered by journalist and author Joe Warwick.

The British Larder, in Suffolk, picked up the prize last year for its smoked venison Scotch egg, which is now stocked at London department store Selfridges.

The Bladebone Inn, in Berkshire, picked up the award the previous year for its entry made with duck egg, truffle layer, and potato and Parma ham breadcrumb.
