With its tongue firmly in cheek, the brewery said it “might look to turn some of them into pubs”.
James Cuthbertson, Dark Star director, wrote in an email to Tesco: “If any of these stores are ones that previously traded as pubs, we'd be delighted to discuss the possibility of returning them to their original use and get the beer flowing through the pumps again.
“With pubs raising over £100,000,000 for charity each year and forming such a vital part of the fabric of society, I hope you'll look favourably upon the request.”
In response, Tesco said:
"Dear Mr Cuthbertson
Thank you for contacting us.
We do not have a comprehensive list of the stores which are closing at this time. There is currently no time scale as to when the store closures will occur.
All staff at the stores involved will be informed before any information is made public. There will be a consultation period and all staff affected will have a meeting with the Personnel Manager at the individual stores in question.
As soon as we have further information this will be released to the public on our Tesco Plc website."
