The so-called Beard Liberation Front, which campaigns 'aganist beardism', has announced that Stuart Ross, the head brewer for Magic Rock Brewery in Huddersfield, has won its 'Beard of Spring' award.

Despite the common perception of brewers and beards, it is the first time a brewer has won the award in the twenty years it has been given out, and reflects the rise of craft brewing.

Magic Rock currently brews a number of popular craft beers, especially its pale ale High Wire and Cannonball IPA, and is the process of a £750,000 move of its brewery to increase capacity.

The Award is one of four seasonal 'hirsute accolades' that leads to the 'Beard of the Year' in December.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said: "Of course there is a certain media stereotype associated with craft beer and beards but the reality that is the first time a brewer has won an Award underlines that it remains the case that the beard must be one that makes an excellent positive public impact and that is certainly the case with Magic Rock."
