Young’s Pub Company has acquired Islington pub the Canonbury with an eye to re-opening it as a food-led venue.

General manager Oisin Rogers, who previously worked at fellow Young’s site the Ship, Wandsworth, is set to take the helm of the Canonbury, which re-opens in late May.

The site’s new food offer will be focused on seasonal British ingredients.

Rogers said: “I am really excited that my name is going over the door at the Canonbury and look forward to opening this new pub for Young’s.

“The Canonbury has huge potential and with the recruitment of a great kitchen brigade we will be developing a strong food offer.”

Extensive renovations and refurbishments are currently taking place at the site, including the introduction of new fixtures and furniture as well as leather booths and sofas.

The pub garden is also set to receive an overhaul.

Egg-celent credentials

Rogers formerly organised the Ship’s annual Scotch Egg Challenge, which saw a host of chefs and industry competing for the title of the nation’s best Scotch egg.

Previous winners include the Cornish Project, which just re-opened historic Fitzrovia pub the Newman Arms and the British Larder, an acclaimed Suffolk gastropub that closed early this year.
