The idea: Bring your own vinyl and barbecue parties

Where: Ladywell Tavern, Lewisham, London

Website:www.ladywelltavern.com

Twitter: @LadywellTavern

The idea: Party-goers bring along their own vinyl records to be played at the monthly party nights. A jerk chicken barbecue feeds guests.

How it works: Bring Your Own Vinyl (BYOV) nights are held on the last Friday of each month — hosted by local DJ, Bobby International. A jerk chicken barbecue complements the reggae music often played. Nights are held all year round, with the barbecue running through spring, summer and autumn.

Marketing: The parties are promoted on the pub’s website and social media feeds. Posters are used and word of mouth is a key draw for the events.

Be prepared: An indoor stage and lighting are provided for the DJ while the barbecue is set up a few hours in advance of the party. The jerk chicken is prepared off-site and is delivered on the morning of the event. Chicken is served on a paper plate with a basic salad.

Pay-off: Offers a point of difference; creates a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Key benefits: Drives footfall; although takings on the kitchen menu are down, wet sales are up, leading to an overall increase in takings.

Advice: Director of the Enterprise Inn’s pub, Darren Debono, says: “Involve the community as much as possible. Both the music and barbecue are run by people who don’t work for the pub, yet they put their time and energy in.”

Best outcome: Upwards of 40 people attend each event.
