An historic north Wales pub has reopened following a £660,000 joint investment from the licensees, a heritage organisation and owner Enterprise Inns.

The Station Hotel – a 145-year-old Grade II listed venue in Colwyn Bay – was refurbished as part of a wider heritage regeneration project in the town. It reopened on Thursday (21 May)

Enterprise stumped up £200,000, while £360,000 came from Colwyn Bay’s Townscape Heritage Initiative.

New licensees Rita and Keith Stuart, who also run Enterprise pub the Albert in neighbouring Llandudno, contributed £100,000.

Previously known as the Central Hotel, a decision was taken to revert it back to its original name as part of the refurb.

Period features

Work on the pub involved having the exterior overhauled, stonework replaced, and architectural period features reinstated, including the chimney and sash windows.

A ‘1930s style’ has been adopted inside, with new fixtures and fittings throughout. Additionally, the bar and lounge areas have been combined to create more space.

Having been at the Albert for 17 years, Rita Stuart said taking on the Station was an “exciting new challenge” for the couple.

She said: “Its transformation has been incredible to watch, and we know its return is highly anticipated in the town. We can’t wait for everyone to experience the new and improved offer.

Stuart added: “As well as a selection of cask ales, premium world beers and quality wines, we’ll be serving hearty, home-cooked food every day – including meat pies, roast dinners and fish dishes. One of our talented chefs from the Albert will head up the kitchen.”

Conservation project

Judi Greenwood, Townscape Heritage Initiative project manager for Colwyn Bay, said: “The Station was part of a conversation project running until 2017, and to see the hard work has paid off is a fantastic feeling.

“Our objective was to drastically improve the condition of the property, while respecting its history and heritage. We used old photographs to ensure we restored all parts of the building correctly.”

Enterprise divisional director Jonathan Walter added: “This significant investment is yet another example of our commitment to supporting publicans, and giving them the tools they need to run and grow successful businesses.

“We’re thrilled that Keith and Rita are taking on another Enterprise pub in Conwy, given the great business they run at The Albert.”

  • Leading civic dignitaries at the opening included MP for Clwyd West, David Jones, Colwyn Bay deputy mayor councillor John Davies, and Conwy County Borough Council deputy leader councillor Ronnie Hughes.
