Pubs can’t stay out of the fight against terrorism according to CPL Training, which has added a course in counter terrorism to its line-up.

The training provider will run new courses in vulnerability awareness and counter- terrorism after recognising ‘the need for licensees to understand what to do in critical situations.’

The Counter Terrorism Awareness course focusses on door supervisors and making them aware of how to spot a suspicious package or recognise suspicious behavior.

The courses were developed in response to demand from customers according to CPL Training director Paul Chase.

He said: “Operators want to equip their employees with the knowledge of how to deal with vulnerable people.”

“In London as police crime prevention budgets are cut and the thin blue line gets thinner, the police are looking to industry to step in. A lot of pubs now have a customer care manager on the premises who is trained to spot and handle vulnerable people. The course helps teach them how to mitigate risks for the vulnerable individual and for the pub’s licence, having the added bonus of reducing the burden on policing.”

CPL has also refreshed its conflict management course with aim of showing licensees how best to control potential conflict situations that can often lead to expedited reviews.

The course has received the stamp of approval from Yummy Pub Co managing director Anthony Pender, who described it as ‘comprehensive’ and said: “The overwhelming majority of employees on the Conflict Management course have expressed their confidence now in handling a potential conflict.”
