Natalie Sawyer: Deadline Day best enjoyed down the pub

Deadline Day in the Premier League can be action-packed, nerve-racking, devastating and euphoric for football fans as news of the latest transfers roll in up to the last second.

And it's as much of a roller coaster ride for Sky Sports News presenter Natalie Sawyer as anyone else.

As fans watch nervously in pubs across the country as Sawyer delivers the news on Monday 1 February, she's got one eye on the dealings surrounding her beloved Brentford FC.

She told the Publican’s Morning Advertiser: "As a Brentford fan, it's a worrying time, we're having our players touted by other clubs as we're doing well. It's nerve-racking.

"We want to retain our players so it's a little bit scary. We’re not looking to sell but if clubs come in with the right money for a player… ”

Thrilling

If she wasn't on reporting duties, Sawyer thinks the perfect place to soak up the action is at the pub.

"It's a great day to be in the office, and in the newsroom. But if I wasn't there it would be good to get to a pub and watch it, to be with you mates. It involves every team in the country.

"It's thrilling to see something happen there and then, and it can change the course of a season," she said.

Done Deal

Sky Sports and Molson Coors have teamed up to launch a limited release beer, Done Deal, which Sawyer has been pulling pints of at her local. The beer was created to celebrate football's January transfer window while the build-up to the deadline is aired live on Sky Sports.

Sawyer continued: "Behind the scenes there's a huge logistical operation for Deadline Day. We're planning for weeks in advance to get a reporter to all the big stadiums and make sure we cover everything.

"January is always interesting. I wouldn't say clubs panic but some are struggling and might need to strengthen to get out of the relegation zone. It was fascinating to see Jonjo Shelvey swapping clubs."

Rumours

The presenter tipped Arsenal as a potential big-mover in the window due to their lack of outfield signings in summer.

"January is incredibly important - clubs are looking ahead to January in the first half of the season, scouting around. There are so many rumours about players moving to the Premier League," Sawyer added.

"We want to get viewers closer and closer to the action, to see what deals are on and off."

The transfer deadline ends at 11pm on Monday 1 February.
