Wet-led pub operator Amber Taverns has taken on closed freehold pub the Watercress Harry in Kettering, Northamptonshire in an off-the-market deal conducted by property specialists Davey Co.

Amber Taverns now has over 100 sites across the midlands and the north.

Managing director James Baer told the Publican’s Morning Advertiser the company would be carrying out a full refurbishment and investing over half a million in the site before it reopens later in the summer.

“The pub is a good location to trade in and there’s an opportunity to create a great pub with a nice atmosphere. The wet model works when you offer good value and give the customer a good offer in terms of value, range of drinks and the quality of the environment.

“Recently a lot investment has focussed on food and I’m sure that will continue but investment in wet-led pubs has been neglected and then people wondered why they were underperforming.

He added that new innovations in the drinks industry, like new varieties of draft and bottled ciders, are putting wet-led pubs in a stronger position.

“We’re competing with people’s front rooms and supermarket pricing so anything that can be done to get people of their backsides is worth doing.”
