Beer is likely to be the drink of choice for many customers watching big sporting matches in pubs this summer, but offering something different may give your margins a boost. Nicholas Robinson has put together some key drinks for pubs to consider offering ahead of key games

Warner Edwards’ Victoria Rhubarb Martini

Warner Edwards gin bottle

Stir 65ml of Warner Edwards Victoria’s Rhubarb Gin with 10ml of dry vermouth and three dashes of rhubarb bitters over ice for 30 seconds and pour into a martini glass with a lime twist to garnish.

Festival ciders

Weston’s new craft festival ciders have a summer flare that’s bright enough to entice punters to try something new. The ciders are available to the on-trade now and include Flat Tyre Cloudy Cider with Rhubard; Handbrake Cloudy Cider with Damson; and Old Banger Cloudy Cider with Raspberry. The range comes in 10-litre fridge bags and has an ABV of 4%.

Retro Hooch Refresher cocktail

Mix a bottle of Hooch with 25ml of Corky’s Sour Cherry and Raspberry Glitter in a tall glass with ice for a Refresher sweet-style long drink. Ideal as a quick daytime cocktail for customers looking for something different.

Strawberry cider
The popularity of fruit cider is continuing to rise, resulting in increased presence on the bar. So, Carlsberg has added a draught Strawberry & Rhubarb flavour to its Somersby cider portfolio.

Sporty rum cocktails

Sports-themed cocktails could be big hitters on bar menus this summer, according to spirits maker Diageo. The ‘Team Captain’ cocktail is created with Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold rum along with lager and lemonade.
How to make:

Craft beer
Carlsberg’s recently-launched craft beer range features an elegant and light Bee 17 pilsner, which has a floral dry-hopped nose.

Adult soft drinks
Don’t forget to cater for the ‘non-drinkers’ this summer with premium adult-friendly mocktails. Fill half a glass with ice and add the contents of half a passion fruit with 25ml of cardamom syrup and top with 50ml of premium lemonade, such as Galvanina’s Sicilian Lemon, for a long refreshing drink.

Serve up a Pimm’s

Pimm's original and strawberry

Wimbledon wouldn’t be the same without a glass of Pimm’s to enjoy while taking in the court action. Make it up in batches to be served to groups in jugs or from a glass drinks dispenser to add a bit of theatre. Or, simply serve it individually by the glass.
Perfect serve:

Buckets of bottles

Kopparberg Fruit Cider may not be synonymous with sport, but large numbers of customers who have more reason to frequent their local pubs, combined with (hopefully) warmer, sunny days, means fruit ciders will be popular options. For the perfect serve, pour over ice.

On-trade exclusive

J2O Flamingo Fling

Take advantage of J2O’s exclusive on-trade Flamingo Fling variant launched for this summer. Whether you choose to mix it with spirits, serve it in the bottle or in a glass over ice, it should prove to be an on-trade exclusive that gives punters an excuse to come back for more.

Wine with a fizz
