Taking on a pub that had previously been named locally as the Dopemakers and turning into a thriving community hub, hosting everything from cheese clubs to touring bands is no mean feat, but Geraldine and John Baker seized the challenge with both hands.

Taking over the Ropemakers in Bridport, Dorset, nine years ago, the couple have worked hard to shake off its previous reputation and have built a thriving community around the business, with events and live music giving the pub real standout appeal in a competitive market.

Local produce

An award-winning beer offer is complimented by a growing food operation, with a real emphasis on local suppliers. A sign in the pub advertises the fact the vast majority of produce is bought in from suppliers within walking distance of the pub itself.

The pub is strongly embraced by the local community and John and Geraldine are very active, supporting initiatives like the local allotment society and supporting a struggling nearby youth club.

Customers are heavily involved in suggesting activities and events and following the donation of a lot of Scalextric track from one regular, the couple are now planning a regular monthly club meeting to raise money for charity.
