Kent-based family brewer Shepherd Neame was on the point of giving up on the Kings Head when Scott Richardson and Mark Lightford turned up with a comprehensive business plan and a clear idea of how they could turn around a struggling pub.

After three years of strong and steady growth, it has been named the brewer’s Restaurant of the Year. Shepherd Neame bought into Richardson and Lightford’s concept from the start, investing in a modern and stylish refurbishment and agreeing to de-brand the pub to allow its new distinctive identity to shine through. A close relationship has continued.

Head chef Rob Cooper has created a traditional British menu with a touch of flair, while the Kings Head also hosts tasting events. Customers are encouraged to return through the pub’s loyalty scheme, and new visitors are attracted by a Brocante, a French-style outdoor food market staged once a month in the pub’s coaching alley.

Staff

Staff are specially trained in food and drink knowledge and a small shop inside the front door showcases local produce for sale.

There are seven well-appointed and well-occupied letting rooms, with three more opening this year alongside a new conference room that’s helping develop the pub’s role as a community hub, giving something back.
