A North Yorkshire brewery has joined forces with comedy icons Monty Python to create a Christmas beer.

Black Sheep Brewery has produced A Christmas Beer They Call Brian. A Very Naughty Pale Ale at 3.9% ABV and named after Monty Python’s 1979 hit movie, Life of Brian.

More than 1m Facebook fans chose the name Brian and the Pythons added ‘A Christmas Beer They Call…’ and ‘A Very Naughty Pale Ale’ after star of the show, Michael Palin, had said: “I’d quite like to see ‘naughty’ on a beer bottle.”

The beer will be available in pubs throughout December and has a pump clip with Python-style artwork and a ‘Brian’ logo.

Perfect inspiration

Black Sheep Brewery sales and marketing director Jo Theakston said: “Life of Brian is one of the most iconic British comedy films of all time and the perfect inspiration for a festive Monty Python beer.

“The Pythons have been involved throughout the development of our new beer. I’m sure their fans and drinkers alike will agree, it’s a quality brew.”

Black Sheep and the Pythons have teamed up before: in 1999 a Holy Grail ale was created to celebrate the comedy group’s 30th anniversary and their movie of the same name. The Monty Python’s Holy Grail ale has become one of the brewery’s most popular beers and is now a permanent feature in cask and bottle.

'Naughty' things

Theakston said: “Our other Python-themed beer, Holy Grail, has become incredibly popular and helps kick off pub banter among those who love to recite classic lines from the film.

“Brian very much follows in that tradition and might even help inspire some renditions of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life in pubs throughout the Christmas period.

“We are always looking to offer our customers creative and exciting brews and together with the support and backing of Monty Python, we are expecting very ‘naughty’ things with the creation of Brian!”
