Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) members are set to discuss the future of the organisation, the potential to reduce restrictions on labelling and whether the term 'craft beer' will be accepted.

At CAMRA’s Members’ Weekend annual general meeting (AGM) in Bournemouth this week, more than 1,000 members will vote on a motion to reduce the restrictions of the organisation’s definition of flavoured and pasteurised real cider and perry.

A motion on whether craft beer will be applicable to real ale will also be tabled, according to the beer body.

Strong future and role

The topics form part of CAMRA’s Revitalisation Project, launched last year to ensure the body has a strong future and role in the beer sector.

Last year, the project polled more than 20,000 of its members to gain opinions on how CAMRA must move forward in the coming years.

Findings from the project, which says CAMRA should widen its vision and mission to reflect changing consumer needs and developments in the drinks sector, will also be discussed.

A final vote on the Revitalisation Project proposals will take place at the 2018 Members’ Weekend in Coventry.

‘The future positioning’

CAMRA national chairman Colin Valentine said: “The Members’ Weekend provides a unique opportunity for individuals to come together and discuss the future positioning and policies of our campaigning organisations.

“Our membership remains at the heart of any and all decisions that we take, so this weekend helps us to share ideas about CAMRA’s future.”

Those at the AGM will also be asked to vote on a motion proposing that awards are not given to those who contravene CAMRA’s values, especially if they display discriminatory attitudes on social media and elsewhere.
