The City of London Distillery is set to gain new routes to the gin market thanks to 'strategic' investment from Halewood Wines & Spirits.

Further to this, the microdistillery will benefit from support in marketing and promoting its brands.

The City of London Distillery produces City of London Dry, Old Tom and Sloe Gins, Christopher Wren Gin and Square Mile Gin.

The spirits complement Halewood’s existing portfolio of premium gin brands including Whitley Neill Gin, Liverpool Gin and Marylebone Gin.

A loyal customer base

The company would not disclose the exact figure of investment but the City of London Distillery managing director and master distiller Jonathan Clark outlined the opportunity the capital will give.

He said: “Being the only gin distillery in the Square Mile has given us a loyal customer base since we opened in 2012.

“The Halewood investment now gives us the opportunity, not only to continue experimenting and perfecting our existing gin portfolio here in the city, but also to expand our reach throughout the rest of the UK and internationally.”

Halewood Wines & Spirits group CEO Stewart Hainsworth lauded Clark's talent as a distiller and explained why the spirit company decided to invest.

Distinctive offering in a busy market

He said: “Clark is an incredibly high-calibre distiller with a distinctive offering in a busy market.

“With our focus on craft, Clark's unique proposition and passion for traditional high-grade distilling caught our eye and we’re looking forward to supporting him in expanding his premium portfolio.”

This isn’t the first time Halewood has agreed an investment deal as in January, it provided capital for Hawkshead Brewery.

The Lake District company planned to build a new brewery, expand production and see its craft beers gain new route to market, as a result of the investment.
