Bar and restaurant group The Alchemist has pumped £1.5m into the opening of a new shopping centre bar in Oxford, creating 75 new jobs.

The new venue will officially open on 28 October and is the company’s 12th venue.

Alchemist Oxford covers a 4,600sq ft space and claims to offer customers an immersive drinking and dining experience.

Managing director Simon Potts said: “We wanted our arrival in Oxford to be impactful and unconventional to inspire locals to imagine things differently.”

Street theatre takeover

Potts was referring to pre-launch activity, which included a street theatre takeover where a troop of 14 steampunk-inspired performers “disturbed and delighted” the locals.

Free drinks were promised to those who shared their moments with the street performers on social media, as well as pictures of the urban art that had popped up around the area and the company’s logo.

“Oxford is a fantastic city full of spirit, intrigue and history – with an unrivalled food and drink scene. It’s enjoying a real renaissance and we want to be part of this.”

Over the summer, The Alchemist announced triple opening plans for this year, which would see the company invest £4.5m in additional venues.

The push will see the company make its first move into the south-west and Wales.

‘Three new sites’

At the time Potts said: “We are delighted to announce the three new sites; Cardiff, Nottingham and Bristol are all fantastic cities and I believe we have secured amazing locations in each of them.

“The acquisitions will take us to 15 sites – which is a great achievement and testament to the hard work of the whole team.”

He added: “It’s a real joy to be able to announce positive plans for our continued growth at a time when there seems to be a lot of uncertainty in the sector.

“Our guests seem to be enjoying our unique offer and I’m confident that The Alchemist brand will be a positive addition to cities wherever it goes in the future.”
