The landlady of the Princess Royal in Burnley, Lancashire, has promised to rename the pub if the Clarets secure European football for next season.

Burnley - who’s Turf Moor stadium is located less than half a mile from the Princess Royal - have been standout performers during the current Premier League season.

Manager Sean Dyche, originally from Kettering, Nottinghamshire, became Burnley manager in 2012 and has led them through two stints in the Premier League. As a player he played for a host of clubs across the UK including Chesterfield, Millwall and Watford - where he was manager before taking charge at Burnley.

Delivering European football to the Lancashire town of close to 75,000 people is considered such a monumental achievement that the Princess Royal’s landlady Justine Lorriman promised to rename her venue after the manager if qualification for next season is secured.

Lorriman told the Lancashire Telegraph: "I thought if we get into Europe we have to got to get (Sean Dyche) in this season. I never thought we would actually get into the Europa League. It was just a joke and yet here we are. It's brilliant.

"I'm going to the Burnley player awards on Monday and hope to get the chance to speak to Sean about the idea and get his blessing."

After getting permission to change the name, the pub’s management settled on ‘the Royal Dyche’.

Having achieved promotion from the Championship in 2016, Burnley struggled to a 16th place finish last season.

However, their form over the course of the current campaign sees them occupy seventh place in the Premier League, one of three Europa League qualification places, six points clear of eighth placed Everton - 15 goals better off on goal difference - with just two games remaining.

Burnley season-ticket holder Lorriman added: "I don't know if I am more excited about getting into Europe or renaming the pub."
