The Setting Sun pub is set to open its doors once again in time for Easter under the guidance of new licensees following a £314,000 renovation.

The pub in Hanover, Brighton, has been closed since September 2018 but will reopen in early April under licensees Fynn Chamberlain and Kathryn Joyce who plan to transform it into a family and dog-friendly local.

The renovations funded by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars, will include creating an all-weather covered pergola area – with heaters to be installed at a later date – to enable customers to enjoy the pub’s panoramic views of Brighton’s Palace and West piers whatever the weather.

In addition, the pub’s interior will be reconfigured to create seating for an extra 24 covers, while a new kitchen will be to enable the pub to offer a broader menu.

Reconnecting with community

Chamberlain, who is assistant manager at the Fountain Head pub where Joyce is currently manager, will manage the Setting Sun on a day-to-day basis.

“We want to reconnect the Setting Sun with the local community and be a great vibrant place to come for a coffee, pint or something to eat,” he explained.

“We love the fact that there is a real mix of people on the doorstep from families, to workers, students and retired residents and want the pub to reflect that.

“It is important to us that everyone feels welcome. With lots of local artists in Hanover, we want to introduce regular artist fairs later in the summer so they can showcase and sell their art.

“We can’t wait to open the pub and are planning a get-together to give our neighbours a sneak preview of the pub before we open the doors to all.

“We also intend to hold a children and family Easter egg hunt around pub and garden on the Easter weekend.”

Removing prior limitations

“The Setting Sun was limited in what it could offer before because of its size,” Star Pubs & Bars regional operations director Dugald Macer added.

“The refurbishment increases capacity, brings the pub up to date and makes it a place to go in all seasons, not just at the height of the summer.

“We’re delighted that Fynn and Kathryn are taking on the Setting Sun because, between the two of them, they have 20 years’ experience running pubs in Brighton.

“They also know the area, are community minded and are passionate about making the pub central to the Hanover neighbourhood.

“Pubs like the Setting Sun need this kind of investment and good operators to run them to ensure they stay relevant to their customers. They now have it.

“We wish Fynn and Kathryn every success with their new venture.”
