Winning whisky: Highland Park's Twisted Tattoo combines whisky matured in Rioja-seasoned wine casks and Bourbon casks
Highland Park has announced the release of Twisted Tattoo, a 16-year-old single malt whisky, which is part-matured in Rioja-seasoned wine casks.

Launched by leading spirits supplier Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, Twisted Tattoo is its first expression to combine whisky matured in Rioja-seasoned wine casks and first-fill Bourbons casks.

In its marketing strategy, Highland Park has a strong accent on the Viking past and everything that has shaped the Scottish Orkney Islands and their culture.

The bottle’s striking design is claimed to reflect the islands’ Norse heritage and the Viking legend of the Midgard Serpent that grew so large it twisted around the earth to bite its own tail.

To bring the mythology to life on the bottle, Highland Park has partnered with renowned Danish tattoo artist Colin Dale, who specialises in the ancient art of dot-work tattooing to created Twisted Tattoo’s design.

“Highland Park is incredibly proud of its Orcadian routes, which is why so many of our whiskies celebrate our home – and Twisted Tattoo is no different,” said Chris Anderson, head of brands at Edrington-Beam Suntory UK.

“It is innately Nordic and we want to pay homage to this throughout the launch of our latest whisky partnership, which brings liquid and art together.”

Twisted Tattoo (46.7% ABV) is said to boast a rich and full-bodied whisky, hailing notes of light heather peat and soft red fruits.
