NHS workers will be able to order a free pint at one London tavern next month when the service marks its 71st year.

The Pembury Tavern, in Hackney, east London, wanted to make a gesture of thanks to punters who work long hours in the healthcare service.

NHS workers can order a free pint or soft drink to mark the service’s birthday – which is on Friday 5 July – starting on Monday 1 July through to Friday.

There will also be an offer on food in the same week, with NHS employees eligible for a 25% discount on all food served at the pub.

The Pembury Tavern co-founder and managing director Ed Mason said the heavy workloads and long hours worked by NHS staff amid a rising care demand had inspired the pub to organise the offer.

He explained: “I’m incredibly grateful to the NHS and the unbelievable work that they do on a daily basis; this is a small gesture to say thank you for a service that provides so much for the local community.

“The more we can do to support our brilliant NHS while encouraging people to come  together, the better.”

Hackney brewery The Five Points Brewing Company relaunched the pub last year after raising more than £1m through a crowdfunding push to expand its operation.

The pub plays host to various charity fundraising events for its local community, including its chosen charities for the year, Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest, and Access all Areas.

NHS employees must register for a free ticket on the pub’s Eventbrite page to redeem their free drink and show their staff ID at the bar.
