Rekom will open as the UK’s first Proud Mary pub at the end of October after having acquired the former Yard Bar on Cardiff’s St Mary’s Street.

The bar, pub, and club operator – which operates over 200 sites internationally and 48 in the UK – plans to open another Proud Mary pub in Swansea in early 2023.

The first pub will be a two-floor venue with capacity for 950 and will add to Rekom’s five existing venues in Wales. It will serve a range of drinks and beer and feature live sports, as well as local bands on weekends and music bingo and quiz nights during the week.

Further opening plans

There are currently six Proud Mary pubs in Denmark, Finland, and Norway.

Rekom brought German-style beer bar Heidi’s to the UK this year and plans to open further venues under brands operated by its Danish parent company, including the Dorsia (premium nightclub) and Rabalder (cocktail bar) concepts.

The parent company operates more than 100 different brands across its portfolio in Scandinavia and the UK.

Investment continues

In September last year, Peter Marks, Rekom UK’s chief executive, told MCA the business was moving forward with its strategy of cluster openings in major UK towns and cities, with Bristol, Nottingham, and Edinburgh on the target list.

Rekom’s regional director Graeme Da Silva said: “We are delighted to continue investing in Cardiff, which is such a vibrant and exciting city. Heidi’s has exceeded all expectations and PRYZM continues to be one of our most successful clubs, so we are confident Proud Mary Pub will prove to be a similar hit.

“Whether you want to meet friends for a beer, watch sport, take part in a pub quiz, or enjoy a late night party, Proud Mary Pub delivers. We will be working 24/7 to open in time for when Wales takes on New Zealand – hopefully the result will give us double cause for celebration!”
