The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) has announced the quarterfinalists for this year’s Licensee of the Year Award (LOYA).

Since its launch in January, those working in the licensed trade were encouraged to enter to showcase their business, including how they have championed diversity, development, and sustainability.

More than 300 licensees were nominated by colleagues, customers, and friends for the quarterfinals of the award which is sponsored by Sky.

Judges selected 57 quarterfinalists based on the strength of applications as well as social media and web assessments.

The next step will involve HGEM, partners of LOYA, sending out mystery diners and drinkers to each of the quarterfinalists.

Prestigious awards

BII chief executive Steve Alton said: "LOYA is the most prestigious & hard-fought award, showing the excellence in our sector. We are delighted to have had so many nominations again this year, despite the challenges that our sector has faced over the last few years.

“We are proud that these awards offer a value-added experience to all those involved with business insight and the chance to evaluate their businesses at every stage, from mystery diner visits and feedback, right through to our final judging day at Sky HQ.

“The best of luck to everyone involved this year and I look forward to meeting our finalists in June for their final judging day."

Ceremony celebration

The semi-finalists will be announced in April. Head judges Sue Allen and Ashley McCarthy will then visit their sites and conduct an interview. Next, the judges will decide with 2022 winners – Amanda and Nick Hemming – to decide who the six finalists will be.

Next, all finalists will be presented with a trophy at the BII Summer Event on 20 June where the winning Licensee of the Year 2023 will be crowned.
