Fuller, Smith & Turner has announced the return of its summer event, Opera in the Garden.

Returning with a new production, Lovers, Losers and Larrikins, the pub operator and brewers’ operatic season, produced in collaboration with Rogue Opera, will include 24 performances at 24 Fuller’s pubs between Sunday 18 June and Monday 31 July.

This year’s performances weave a modern story with new original dialogue, showcasing all the big issues in opera including doomed love, star-crossed lovers, the eternal battle between good and evil, loyalty and jealously, power and revenge.

Bringing opera to new spaces

Viewers can also expect to see appearances from comedians and sidekicks, as well as drinking songs alongside the operatic pieces.

Rogue Opera founder Bronwen Stephens-Harding said: “Bringing opera to new spaces and audiences is a key part of our vision and what better way to experience opera for the first time, or revisit your favourites, than in your local pub garden.

“We’re excited to premiere Rogue Opera’s third original production, Lovers, Losers and Larrikins, including fantastic singing, acting, staging and clever use of props to bring the drama to life.”

In addition, all operatic pieces accompanying the spoken English dialogue will be sung in their original language with Rogue Opera’s four singers and pianist returning for Fuller’s Opera in the Garden.

Great characters and music

Tickets for the performances cost £18 and can be purchased online from Fuller’s, which was recently crowned Best Leased/Tenanted Pub Company (up to 500 sites) at the 2023 Publican awards website.

Last year’s Opera in the Garden season saw performances take place across 23 Fuller’s sites, with the production showcasing opera’s heroes and villains.

Stephens-Harding added: “It’s been great fun creating another Opera in the Garden production for Fuller’s. We have lots of great characters and music to share with the audiences and I can’t wait to get back on the garden stages this summer.”
