Beds & Bars, the leading backpacker hostel, pub and bar operator, has announced a top team shake up following the announcement that managing director Murray Roberts is taking retirement.

Murray Roberts, who has been with the business for nearly three decades, 10 of those years as MD,  will now step down from the role prompting a company restructure.

Luke Knowles moves up to become new CEO, replacing Keith Knowles, who founded the business and now steps into the role of executive chairman, supported by Gemma Placey; finance director, Sophie Herbert; sales and marketing director, Chris Lambert; newly appointed to chief operating officer and Jan Kroezen newly appointed to chief support officer.

During Robert’s time, Beds & Bars has expanded significantly, opening sites across major cities in Europe, doubling its turnover and tripling EBITDA, the company said, all while working hard to mentor and grow the next generation of management within the business.

His role has also seen him advocate for the wider youth travel industry as a respected voice, and he’s held many many roles including being a board member of the British Education and Travel Association, a Director of Pub Aid, and the set up of World Hostels committee during the pandemic to champion the industry.

Reflecting on his time at Beds & Bars, Murray said he was “filled with pride and gratitude to have been part of an exciting journey and was deeply thankful for the incredible team, partners, and guests who have been part of this adventure”.

Keith Knowles praised Murray's contributions to the group and the wider sector: "Murray's industry knowledge and leadership has been instrumental in shaping Beds and Bars into the dynamic and thriving organisation it is today. His wisdom and strategic perspective will still be available in the future to help us navigate the exciting opportunities ahead."
