Theakston launches alcohol-free version of Old Peculier

T&R Theakston, has launched an alcohol-free version of its flagship beer, Old Peculier, as demand for low and no beers continues to grow.

Aplty named Nowt Peculier the new dark ruby ale was described by the brewery as a “deeply satisfying non-alcoholic option for traditional ale enthusiasts”.

Using advanced filtration technology alongside the traditional recipe and brewing methods, Theakston has preserved everything that’s made Old Peculier the “iconic” pint it is today - minus the alcohol.

New technology

Boasting subtle notes of cherry and banana with a bitter hop finish, the 0.0% beer has been brewed with the traditional Fuggle hop alongside Challenger and Progress bitter hops.

Theakston chairman Simon Theakston said: “As a brewery with almost 200 years of experience, we have never rested on our laurels and felt that, in line with changing market demands and increasing appetite for low and no alcohol options, now was the right time to create a 0.0% version of our most famous beer.

“Our dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, matched with the expertise of our brewers and remarkable new technology has enabled us to closely replicate the sophisticated flavours of Old Peculier in alcohol-free form and we’re extremely proud of the end product.”

Ideal choice

First brewed in Masham in the early 19th century, Theakston’s Old Peculier is the flagship brand of the family-run company, with its name a tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of the town as a ‘Court of the Peculier’, first established in medieval times.

Theakston added: “Available in time for the Christmas festivities, Nowt Peculier is eminently drinkable all session long, making it an ideal choice for loyal Theakston fans and new drinkers alike looking for an alcohol-free option this festive season.”

In its annual report for the year ending 31 December 2023, the Independent Yorkshire brewery reported an 8% boost for its pre-tax profits, recording an £18k uptick on the previous year to £248k.
