The Eastern Area Planning Committee Unanimously approved the plans, submitted by Chippenham-based building firm Backhouse Housing, earlier this week.
According to the proposal, the scheme will see the erection of 102 new homes, a new shop, improved public spaces, and enhanced pedestrian and cycling connections to the nearby canal.
More scope
The approved redevelopment plans cover most of the former brewery site, excluding the Grade II listed brewhouse, which is subject to a separate planning application.
Work on the site is expected to commence in Summer 2025, with completions anticipated in early 2027.
The brewery, which was built in 1885, was decommissioned around two years ago and production moved to a new site.
Remaining in Devises, Wadworth invested a six-figure-sum into a new brewery on Folly Road, allowing the business, which was a finalist in last year’s Publican Awards in the Best Pub Operations Team category, to expand.
Ahead of the site’s opening, Wadworth chief engineer Stuart Sinden told The Morning Advertiser (The MA) the new brewery was “much smaller” than the historic brewhouse but offered “much more scope” for the brand.
Big investment
Known for its traditional ales, including its flagship brew 6X (4.1% ABV), Wadworth was able to enter the craft beer market after investing in new equipment at the new site.
In addition, Sinden said the new brewery was “significantly more energy efficient”.
Speaking in 2023, Wadworth managing director Toby Bartholomew said: “[The new site] is a big investment for us.
“Our old brewery was built for big brewing and large brews, and we’re not that anymore, we’ve had to modernise and move with the times.”
